The Latest in Climate Accountability Cases

Last month, RFF-grantee, Earthrights, the organization representing the City and County of Boulder, Colorado in its climate lawsuit against ExxonMobil and two Suncor entities, successfully defeated the defendants’ motions to dismiss the lawsuit. This important ruling by the Boulder Court allows the lawsuit to proceed toward discovery and trial. Puerto Rico has become the latest to launch a climate accountability lawsuit against the oil majors, seeking at least $1 billion. A previous climate lawsuit brought by Puerto Rican municipalities claimed that fossil fuel companies violated the federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act and are seeking damages for the devastating 2017 hurricane season.
